What makes PLA different?
PLA (Polylactic Acid) is a bioplastic derived from renewable plant sources such as corn starch or sugarcane — not fossil fuels. Unlike traditional plastics, which can persist in the environment for hundreds of years, PLA is designed to break down under the right conditions, significantly reducing its long-term environmental footprint.
Traditional plastic — derived from fossil fuels, takes 400–1,000 years to break down, releases harmful microplastics, contributes to landfill & ocean pollution, non-renewable resource.
PLA (our material) — made from renewable plant sources, commercially biodegradable, lower carbon footprint to produce, reduces reliance on fossil fuels, part of a circular economy.
Important — disposal guidance
PLA is commercially biodegradable, meaning it breaks down in industrial composting facilities that reach high temperatures (typically 55–60°C or above). It will not biodegrade in a home compost bin, in general landfill, or in the natural environment at a meaningful rate. Please check whether a commercial composting or industrial waste facility accepts PLA in your local area. In the absence of such a facility, PLA should be disposed of with general waste — it remains a significantly better choice than conventional plastic due to its renewable origins and lower production emissions.
