What makes PLA different?
PLA (Polylactic Acid) is a bioplastic derived from renewable plant sources such as corn starch or sugarcane — not fossil fuels. Unlike traditional plastics, which can persist in the environment for hundreds of years, PLA is designed to break down under the right conditions, significantly reducing its long-term environmental footprint.
Traditional plastic
- Derived from fossil fuels
- Takes 400–1,000 years to break down
- Releases harmful microplastics
- Contributes to landfill & ocean pollution
- Non-renewable resource
PLA (our material)
- Made from renewable plant sources
- Commercially biodegradable
- Lower carbon footprint to produce
- Reduces reliance on fossil fuels
- Part of a circular economy
Important — disposal guidance: PLA is commercially biodegradable, meaning it breaks down in industrial composting facilities that reach high temperatures (typically 55–60°C or above). It will not biodegrade in a home compost bin, in general landfill, or in the natural environment at a meaningful rate. Please check whether a commercial composting or industrial waste facility accepts PLA in your local area. In the absence of such a facility, PLA should be disposed of with general waste — it remains a significantly better choice than conventional plastic due to its renewable origins and lower production emissions.
